Welcome to the Behavioral Centers of America
Mental diseases such as depression, bipolar disorder, attention deficit disorder, schizophrenia, etc., and addictive diseases (alcohol and drug abuse) affect millions of individuals of all ages and their families. In any given year about 5% to 7% of adults have a serious mental illness and a similar percentage -- about 5% to 9% -- of children and youth have a serious emotional disturbance. Mental illnesses rank first among diseases that cause disability in the United States. Suicide, a consequence of undiagnosed or untreated mental illness, causes more deaths worldwide each year than homicide or war.
The great news is that mental illness and addictive diseases can be successfully treated. Advances in understanding how the brain works are leading to exciting breakthroughs in the psychiatric treatment of mental illness, alcohol abuse and other drug addictions. To meet the needs and demands of this serious public health challenge, BCA has taken this new understanding of mental illness and addiction as a brain disease and has developed exciting programs and models for the diagnosis, treatment and follow-up care for people with serious mental illness and/or alcohol and drug addictions.
